The Lincoln Lady Cardinals defeated Adrian 12-5 on Monday night to advance to the  Class One State Quarterfinals. They will host Willington - Napeoleon on Thursday.
The game was moved from seven to six in order to avoid the incoming storm. It proved to be the right move as clouds and lightning filled the area minutes after the hard fought game ended.
Lincoln having beaten Adrian 4-1 at home a few weeks back was prepared for a battle.
Head Coach Chris Sanders commented,  “ I reminded the girls that any team we play from here on out at this level can play. They are a good team and scoring those early runs for us was huge. I felt like we kept the pressure on them all night.”
Adrian scored in their first but Lincoln came back with eight runs in their half. As always, Lincoln put together a bunch of hits and took advantage of some misplayed balls by Adrian. They committed seven errors on the night. Lincoln was perfect in the field.
Aleah Paxton gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out six. As good as she was, she wasn’t her usual self. “I felt bad the whole game, but I worked through it. My defense got me out of some tough situations tonight,” Paxton said .
Also, her change-up was her best friend on the mound as it kept Adrian off balance and accounted for several swinging strikes.
Genesis Smith made a couple of nice catches in left field. She walked twice and scored two runs.
Catcher Haley Mackey gunned down a couple of base runners .
Adrian made the mistake of hitting the ball to center field. Lyndsey Koll owns centerfield and balls go there to die in her glove. She went 3-3  at the plate.
Jenna Vanaveer, who raises eyebrows whenever opposing fans find out that she is just a freshman,  made several fine plays in the field.
Haley Elebing went home with a dirty uniform from sliding into home plate on a couple of occasions. She scored three runs.
Cadyn Paxton led off with a double and scored on an error. She made several good plays on third.
Chloe Reese got in on the action with an RBI. She also was the most vocal in the dugout in cheering for her teammates.
Alexis Harms is one of the most improved players on team and has become a capable hitter. She had a single, a ribbie and scored two runs.
Adrian scored twice in the seventh but a ground ball to Vandaveer who tossed to Ebeling at first ended the contest. Elebing had eight putouts. Paxton threw a runner out at first and Smith caught a hard hit ball for the second out.
Lincoln 25-2  lost to Napeleon 8-2 on the road on 4-10 and defeated them 5-4 two days later on 4-12 in the Adrian tournament. This one should be a dandy.
