Luebbert And Glenn Receive Lumpe And Downing Awards

Seniors Jessie Glenn and Matt Luebbert were awarded the Jackie Downing and the Jerry Lumpe Awards last Wednesday at WHS. The awards are actually character awards based on athletic achievements plus their behavior in and outside of the school atmosphere and school settings. It is consider a community award in cooperation with WHS.
While several coaches, teachers and even students were asked their opinions, this year the awards were voted on by WHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Ryan Boyer and BCE sports reporter Johnie J. Logue. The awards are considered the highest honors given to a senior athlete. Their names are added to two separate plaques that will hang in the school cafeteria for years to come.
The late Jerry Lumpe was an WHS standout in both basketball and baseball. He went on to play at Missouri State and was on two NAIA basketball championship teams. He also played in two World Series for the N.Y.Yankees and went on to play for Detroit Tigers and the K.C. Athletics. He is a member of both of the WHS baseball and basketball Hall of Fame.
Lumpe was a class act on and off the field.
Jackie Downing won numerous awards At WHS in basketball and softball. She went on to Missouri Valley where she was names the female Athlete of the Year in her senior year. She played both softball and basketball. She is presently a P.E teacher at the JBMS and she is also the Archery Coach. Downing has long been one of the most popular teachers in the entire Benton County school system. She is a member of the WHS basketball Hall of Fame.
Matt Luebbert was All Conference and All District in basketball this season. He scored over 1700 points. Luebbert was also All- Academic. Luebbert signed a letter this week to attend College of the Ozarks to play basketball. He also excelled in baseball and track. He was the starting QB for two seasons until sidelined by an off season injury. It was his conduct during that time that impressed Coach Boyer. “Luebbert was there for every practice and for every game. He did whatever we asked of him.” Boyer said.
BCE reporter Johnie Logue responded, “Luebbert always consented to interviews and pictures and treated me with respect and common courtesy. One time I was trying to get a picture of him dunking the basketball before practice and he dunked time and time again until I got a usable picture.”
Luebbert follows Randall Sherman, Austin McCall, Wesley Carr and Dallas Larson as past winners.
Jessie Glenn was All Conference, All District and All Academic for volleyball this season. She also was one of the most improved basketball players and just a great teammate. She is going to Warrensburg to study Biology.
Jackie Downing commented, “I didn’t know who they were awarding the honor to this year. Glenn is a good girl and a great choice.” She follows Jessica Kuykendall and Hannah Chapman as past winners.
Girls Basketball Coach Cody Morgan said,  “Jesse Glenn was a great choice and just a great kid.” BCE Sports  Reporter Johnie Logue commented on Glenn, “She was another student that always cooperated with me. We went down to the middle school to get a picture of her with Downing before their graduation walk-through. I never told her what this was all about. Other kids might had complained but not her.”
Matt is the son of  Randy and Michelle Luebbert. Jessie is the daughter of Keith and Sherri Glenn. We wish both students their very best in their future endeavors.
