Rare Coaching Match Up At WHS

It was a very special night on the volleyball court at WHS last Monday night. Not only was it the Cancer Awareness Night and the girls wore pink uniforms for the occasion, but it was rare match up of coaches in mother, Shelly Hodges, versus her daughter, Candace Bauer.
Coach Hodges commented, “This was a highly anticipated game!!! Playing Stover we are ALWAYS pumped up for because #1 I graduated from there but this year my daughter is the Head Coach!!!
I had scouted Stover several times and I knew that they are a  young but good team with quite a few hitters and many good servers. We played good in spurts again but at this point in the season we need to be playing consistently good. We kept the first game close and with the call we got at 23-24 the game could of went either way but it ended at 23-25. In the second game we came out FIRED UP getting ahead of Stover by 5-6 points before we “flipped that switch” again and started letting balls drop and getting down on ourselves.
Coaching against my daughter was actually pretty cool! I didn’t like losing to  her, but she has coached the Lady Bulldogs very well so I knew it would be a fight. It was “funny” looking down at her on her side and see that both of us were standing with our arms crossed or our hands on our hips. She has been around me through all of my coaching years, this year being 30, so we both are very competitive. She’s a little quieter then me but I think in a few years she will holler it out like I do. We have played each other at the JV level twice and my teams have beat hers but this year the tides turned at the Varsity level so it was an intense game and I’m sure it's one we will talk about at the family get-togethers, how she beat “Mom!”
