The Warsaw Wildcats claimed their 13th win of the season and their first conference win by defeating Eldon 63-54 on Friday night at home before a good Court Warming crowd.
With the lead changing several times in the first quarter,Warsaw would pull in front with baskets by Cole Branson and Logan Davis to take a 17-13 first quarter lead. It was 31-26 at half time and both teams went into the locker room with plenty to think about.
Eldon ended up the night going 17-21 from the free throw line which probably kept them in the game as they missed several chip shots down the stretch. Eldon was without the services of one of their leading rebounders and it showed as Matt Luebbert and Cole Branson had 13 and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, controlling the inside at various times.
It was 42-38 after three in a rough third quarter of play. While in the fourth, Eldon would cut the lead to five at 58-53 with 1:33 on the clock. Warsaw would grab a missed free throw by Eldon and race the court with seconds left. Luebbert would try to deliver a dagger by charging the basket. He missed the shot and gave Eldon new life. However, in the end, Luebbert would bang home a couple of free throws and Warsaw had the sweet victory.
Jordan Metz had 21 points to lead Eldon. Devin Degraffenreid was held to ten points by a good defensive effort by several Warsaw players. Luebbert had 26 points, Logan Davis, who had been in a scoring slump, had 17, Branson with ten, Keegan Glenn and Trey Palmer tossed in five a piece.
