The motto for the Warsaw Wildcats this season is to give an “Honest Effort.” They gave it Friday night in a 14-6 victory over Midway in Cleveland MO.
The rain Thursday night prevented Midway from mowing the grass on Friday, but high grass and a few wet spots had little effect on the outcome of the game.
Midway started the game with a trick play with a backfield pass to their other quarterback, but Warsaw was all over it. Warsaw’s improved pass defense was a difference in the game the entire night as Colton Dean had trouble throwing the ball. Both teams had interceptions, but could not gain an advantage.
The quarter ended with no score.
Warsaw got their running game going in the second quarter.
They had a nice run by Aiden Comer for a TD called back on a penalty.  Then Zach Chapman would run in at the 11:20 mark from 10 yards out and would also drive for the two point conversion. It was 8-0.
What looked like an onside kicked for Warsaw failed as Midway would down the ball on the 45. However, their defense would hold.
Then Warsaw would show their newest weapon as QB Matt Couzens would hit Sophomore Jack Gardner with a 30 yard pass in the left corner for the TD, but the extra point failed and it was 14-0,
In the second half, Cole Young would score for the Vikings at the 7:01 mark, They missed the kick and it was 14-6 and it would stay that way to the end.
However, Warsaw had the golden opportunity to score from the one but Couzens would fumbled and the ball went in the end zone and Midway received the ball on the 20.
Brady Slavens, recovering from a fracture foot, came in at QB to give the Wildcats a running game to eat the clock. However, several snaps went astray. Couzens would come back in and take a knee after Warsaw stopped the Vikings on a fourth and six with 38 seconds to go on the thirty.
Chapman was 13-41 and 2-26 with the TD and the two point conversion. Jack Gardner was 3-92 receiving with the TD. Couzens was 1-6 and completed 7-13 for 125 yards. Slavens was 2-6 and 1-2  passing for seven yards.
Head Coach Ryan Boyer said, "I am so proud of our boys. They played as a team. We had some big stops. We have some things to work on for next week. "
Warsaw will play Knob Noster on the road next Friday. We are sorry for technical troubles on the broadcast, but hope to have things solved this week so tune into BCE TV for all of the action.
