The Warsaw High School (WHS) Prom Committee of 12 juniors has many fundraisers planned during the year to support the Junior/Senior Prom. Students are currently painting Christmas decorations on windows of businesses up and down Main Street, and accepting donations for their Prom fund. WHS Art Teacher, Mrs. Greene, is sponsoring the activity and could be found with committee members in downtown Warsaw on Monday, November 18, a day when school is not scheduled.
“We ask the business owners if they want us to decorate their windows, and check with them to see if they have an idea that they would like us to paint,” said Mrs. Greene. “So far, we have done a Charlie Brown Christmas tree at a bank, and a lot of other themes including a snow man, and Christmas trees. We take donations for our services which usually range from $10 to $100, but we don’t collect the funds until we clean off the décor in about February.”
Mrs. Greene said that last year the prom committee painted football art on business windows, but were convinced to do Christmas décor this year by Dr. Amie Breshears, County Engagement Specialist in Agriculture and Environment, MU Extension.
Mrs. Greene said that they hold prom fundraisers all during the school year. They had a 50/50 “Buy a Yard” fundraiser at a football game. If the football landed on a buyer’s yard he/she could win up to $250 dollars. She said they usually raise about $700 at that event. They also sell lollipops, and sold t-shirt logos to businesses at the beginning of the school year. Part of the money from the sale of logos was used to buy school t-shirts provided by Birdman Apparel at a reduced price, and all students were given a free t-shirt. The leftover part of the money from logo sales went into the prom fund.
There is not a specific fundraising goal for the Christmas window decorating, but by the time the prom comes around there should be enough money raised to pay expenses from the total fundraising activities held during the year.
