Despite Rural Population Trend Benton County Holds Steady

USDA reported in the 2017 edition of Rural America at a Glance, that: “Overall, the rural population is shrinking for the first time on record, due to several factors, including long-term outmigration of young adults, fewer births, increased mortality among working-age adults, and an aging population.”
America’s land area is 72 percent rural with 46 million residents, down from 46.2 million in 2015.

G&W Returns To Warsaw

G & W Foods offers a fresh meat department, deli and bakery in addition to a full line of groceries. 
Newman’s Country Mart was sold to Dan William and Bruce Grisham of Willow Springs, MO, just eight months ago. Since then G&W employees have worked to remodel the store and make some major improvements.
“We have been working on the overall store conditions,” said General Manager Bill Marks.“I worked here in Warsaw at the old G&W located in what is now the Warsaw library, but at that time we just didn’t have the volume to stay open.”

R-IX Announces New Assistant Superintendent

Christian Meier will be taking over as the Warsaw R-IX Assistant Superintendent on July 1.  Meier, the current Forsyth High School principal, will replace Tim Thomas who is retiring at the end of the school year.
Meier, who grew up in Indiana, attended Missouri State in Springfield on an academic scholarship.  He began his career as a middle school science and social studies teacher with the Sparta School District.  Meier finished his Master and Education Specialist degrees at William Woods University.

Below freezing temperatures and significant snowfalls kept many people at home on Monday. But, those same conditions also made it necessary for City of Warsaw road crews to arrive at their posts early to begin plowing snow and placing sand and salt on roads to make them safer for drivers.
“Even though it was a holiday, our workers were out at 2 AM on Monday and are to be commended for a job well done,” said Doug Hedrick, City employee directing the road crews.

Seasonal Depression- Activities Conquer The Winter Blues

January weather tends to discourage outdoor fun, but there are plenty of local indoor activities worth checking out. 
One big event coming to the Truman Lake Visitor Center on January 13 is Eagle Days, from 8:30 AM to 4 PM. There will be live eagle presentations given by Dickerson Zoo, as well as informative vendors, a local art display, wood art and photography of wildlife and eagles. There will be a kid’s work shop and video entitled “Where Eagles Soar.” More information is available by calling 660-438-2216.

Year In Review: A Look Back At 2017

As the year 2017 draws to a close, we at the Enterprise flipped through the files of the big stories here in Benton County. 
In January, the Humane Society of Missouri rescued 31 dogs from what it called “filthy” conditions at a home near Windsor in northwestern Benton County.
Thirty of the dogs were small mixed-breed, and one was a Labrador retriever. They were removed and taken to Humane Society headquarters in St. Louis for treatment.

Knights Brighten Up Christmas With Dinner

Over 400  people enjoyed Christmas Dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Christmas Day according to event coordinator Charlie Smith.
“The Christmas Dinner event was started to make sure everyone had a place to go to enjoy food and fellowship on Christmas Day,” said Smith.  “However, now it has turned into a yearly tradition for people from all walks of life.”

Visually Impaired Girl Sees World Through Ham Radio

Blind since birth, Kelly Stanfield of rural Lincoln didn’t let her disability stop her from become a ham radio operator.  Stanfield came to Benton County from Kansas and soon found a group of people who enjoyed talking on the airwaves like herself.  She joined the Benton County, MO ARES and Twin Lakes Amateur Radio Club in August 2017.  She attended meetings, contributed ideas and participated in weekly nets.  She attained her General Class and then Extra Class licenses within a span of two months.
