According to marketwatch.com, five of the most popular New Year’s resolutions include getting healthy, getting organized, living life to the fullest, learning new hobbies and spending less, saving more. However, research has shown that only about 8 percent of people achieve their resolutions. A quick survey around Warsaw, at the beginning of January, revealed that some people don’t make New Year’s resolutions, but those who do have goals that compare to those that are popular.
Donna Grotz, who works at Farmer’s Mutual Insurance of Benton County, said that she had not thought much about making resolutions, but that she hoped for a good year in 2019. Julie Reynolds, who manages the Warsaw Antique Mall, said that she hopes to get more organized. Gloria Jones, a volunteer at the Warsaw Senior Center, said that she doesn’t make resolutions anymore because she is 82 years old and is doing the best she can. She divulged that she exercises and eats well every day, and sleeps good. Larry Walthall, of Warsaw, said that he makes a resolution every year to lose weight, and that last year he only gained six pounds. Loren Burke, who was interviewed while working out at Warsaw Fitness, said that his New Year’s resolution was to lose 20 pounds. He said that every January and February he makes the same goal.
“Sometimes I achieve that goal,” said Burke. “Sometimes I don’t.”
Walthall, Burke and other people who want to improve their physical well being can choose from several venues in Warsaw that offer fitness programs and equipment. Warsaw Fitness, located at 212 Seminary, is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and has all the equipment needed to lose weight or get strong.
“We have dumbbells from one to 100 pounds, cable machines that make it easy on a person by putting him or her in the correct position to work on shoulders, arms, legs, chests, abdomen, etc.,” said Lindsy Phillips, who owns the gym with husband Brian. “We have cardio equipment in the back including a tread mill, different types of bikes, elliptical and ropes to move around to strengthen arms and abdomens.”
Phillips said that some people come to the gym unsure how to begin working on their goals. She or her husband are available to talk to them and guide them as to how they should proceed. She said that personal training is also available. Discounts are offered at the gym to seniors, military, students, and police. There is also a discount program that offers two months of free membership when signing up for one year. The two months can be added on to the year equaling 14 months for the price of 12, or two months of membership costs can be deducted from the normal yearly fee.
The Senior Center has a variety of indoor physical activities that also act as social get-togethers. Line Dancing, and Exercise with Cyndee are offered on Mondays. Zumba, Joint Friendly Exercises and Tai Chi are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And Pilates classes are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
