The third time was the charm as Warsaw’s Kolby Estes defeated Whitfield’s Matthew Schieddig 8-3 to win the Class 1, 152 pound wrestling championship in Columbia, MO. on Saturday.
Tyler Ross, of Lawson, had defeated Estes in the finals the last two seasons. Ross, who beat Estes for a third time, moved up in weight class, so a third championship meeting never happened.
Estes finished 46-2 for the season.
Estes commented to Sports Zone after the match “Just remembering on how bad it felt falling short. I didn’t want that feeling ever again,” Estes said.
“It means the world. It’s been working for the past four years. I fell short the past two, so accomplishing this feels amazing,” Estes said. “He (coach Jared Steenburgen) said he’s proud of me. We’ve worked so hard for this and he’s fixed the things that I’ve done when I fell short the past few years and it’s emotional what we’ve gone through to become state champs.”
The community of Warsaw wishes to congratulate Estes on his State Championship.
