The Boonslick Regional Library branch in Warsaw makes learning fun with reading programs, special events, displays, contests and more. Valerie Fauquier won a recent contest at the library related to a Tools of My Trade display of unusual cooking items on loan from Lonnie Taylor. Fauquier’s prize was a year’s subscription to the Benton County Enterprise.
Entry forms for the contest had a list of 10 items out of 25 unusual cooking tools that were on display, and contestants were required to tell how each one was used in food preparation. The items were from a collection of Lonnie Taylor, Benton County Enterprise food columnist and highly credentialed, skilled chef, during her “food travels.”
Taylor is a graduate of Cordon Bleu in Paris, and has authored five cook books during her culinary arts career. She traveled extensively around the world to study cooking and collected many items on her trips. She also worked with such celebrities as Julia Child.
“In the old days, I spent several months in Italy and Mexico studying food,” said Taylor. “I went on a truffles hunt in Italy and found an antique tortilla press in the mountains outside of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.  I was lucky to have a group of friends that I traveled with on food trips. When we went into the mountains in Mexico, we rented horses.  But, today that would be a dangerous place to go.”
Taylor said she visited Turkey, Sweden, Denmark and England and other countries, collecting things like cookie molds.  She reported that she bought many of her cooking items at E. Dehillerin, a specialty kitchen store in Paris that caters to serious chefs.
The Warsaw library is getting ready to celebrate National Library Week, April 8 – 13, with another contest. People can go into the library and guess the number of items in the library. Four winners will be chosen, and they will receive gift certificates provided by Mom’s Kitchen, Common Ground and Cosmic Café.
The library has trivia contests every week, and winners receive a free ice cream cone from Sonic Drive-In. Regular events at the library during the year include tech time, Legos, story-time, movies and the summer reading program.
