The 2025 MSHSAA Class 1 Wrestling Championships introduced some of the best wrestlers that the state had to offer last Wednesday and Thursday in Columbia on the campus of the University of Missouri.
After two days of wrestling, and after the smoke had cleared, the Warsaw Wildcats saw 4 of their own take the podium, including their first-ever female, while the Cole Camp Bluebirds saw their first-ever state medalist awarded.
Warsaw freshman Emmersyn Miskell (33-12) medaled for the Wildcats when she won by a 7-0 decision over Nevada's Sydnee Baldwin (38-10) in the 115 pound fifth place match, marking her place in program history.
"Emmersyn upset the #1 seed at the district tourney and carried that confidence onto the biggest stage of her career," 'Cats coach Justin Wisdom said. "She avenged 2 losses at the state tourney on her way to a 5th place medal and is the first-ever medalist for Warsaw wrestling for our girls."
In the 113 pound weight class, defending state champion, Warsaw junior Jayce Estes (41-1) was upset in a seminfinal match by Trenton's Jacob White (48-3) before battling his way through the back side of the bracket to take the third place spot with a win by fall (1:52) over Fatima's Tucker Tune (39-5).
"Jayce knew he was going to be in everyone's crosshairs," Wisdom commented. "He managed that really well. Jayce showed great maturity and overcame a difficult position by coming back to take third place in dominating fashion, claiming his second state medal."
At 165, 'Cats senior Drake Murrell (47-5) took his second consecutive medal and one-upped last year's state performance with a 14-6 major decision over Connor Menke (44-5) of Lawson in the third place bout.
"Drake was able to knock off a couple of returning medalists on his way to a third place finish and claim his second state medal," Wisdom said. "Along the way, Drake also reached another milestone, recording his 150th career victory. He is as consistent as they come, and his leadership and accomplishments will be very difficult to duplicate."
Also in the 165 pound weight class, the Bluebirds' Grant Rodriguez (47-7) solidified his place in Cole Camp lore with a sixth place finish after falling to Tipton's Paxton Pyle (33-8) by a 12-5 decision in the fifth place match.
"Grant's bracket was one of the deepest in the tournament," said Bluebirds coach Steve Hubbard. "We are proud of the way that he fought his way back to become the first-ever state medalist in Cole Camp's young program history."
In the 175 pound fifth place match, Warsaw's Josh Harvath (42-6) won by fall (2:09) over Noah Ridgel (25-12) of Lift for Life Academy Charter also staking claim to a spot on the state podium once again.
"Josh was, arguably, in the deepest weight class as there were 6 returning state medalists in the field already," Wisdom commented. "Josh wrestled a good tourney and was able to finish with a dominating performance in his fifth place match."
"All of our qualifiers were juniors," commented Hubbard. "So we are excited about the opportunity for improvement next season!"
Wisdom said, "For the second straight year, the boys finished in the top ten with a ninth place finish, up one spot from last year. That tied for the third highest finish in program history and is the highest finish for the Wildcats since 2005."
The Warsaw coach added, "Over the past three years, our Wildcats have brought home 8 state medals which is more than the previous 12 years combined. These things don't happen without the belief, hard work and support of everyone involved with the program."
