Doris Ellen Nickles, 84, passed away March 6, 2025 after a brief illness in Clinton, Missouri.

Doris was born in Alba, Missouri on October 27, 1940 to Isaac J. Ennis and Blanche M. Earl; She was married “Nick” Nickles for several years before divorcing.

Doris had 3 daughters: Brenda (who preceded her in death), Terry, and Joy. She also has a nephew Mike whom she considered “the son she never had”. Doris had several other niece and nephews, with her beloved grandson Donny preceding her in death.

She has one surviving sister, Linda. She was preceded in death by three brothers: Marvin, Ralph, and Delbert and a sister Rose.

Doris worked many jobs in her lifetime and was a hard worker not to mention a survivor- she always had a can-do attitude. Her life was not always an easy path but she persisted and made a great life for herself. She resided in Peoria, Illinois where she worked at the Penguin Tap for several years and many close relationships and lifetime friends, with whom she stayed in touch.

After his employment ended with the closing of Pabst brewery, Doris and Nickles left with clothes on their back and sheer determination moved to Branson Missouri in early 1980’s (before Branson was Branson). Together they built their bar called “Hard Times “. Doris loved to serve all the customers and enjoyed the many returning customers that came each year to see her. She always kept her German Shepard “ Boozer” by her side, working side by side with her in the bar. Through the business, she was able to meet Willie Nelson, who stopped in for a beer as well as Waylon Jennings and Brad Pitt. Doris also had a clothing shop not far from the bar that she enjoyed selling jewelry and clothing. Doris always loved having the most colorful clothing and jewelry and a flare for eclectic style.
Doris absolutely loved music -she loved her oldies but she loved playing her organ keyboard, especially on New Year’s Eve. She liked to make up melodies and songs as well as sing. These things brought great joy to her. Doris always said they could write a book about her life story.

Doris loved spending time with her grandson Donny fishing and hanging out with her best buddy. Unfortunately he passed away while serving in the US Army.

Doris also enjoyed spending much time with Mike, her cherished nephew, whom she treated him like the son she never had. She loved spending time with him and enjoyed his company. Mike’s presence gave her peace and comfort.

Doris lived her life to the fullest and enjoyed life very much despite hardships she found a way to live life and live it well. Her last important sentiments and words will always stay in our hearts-which is - its import to keep your memories of family and friends as well as staying in touch with those that matter; life is too short so it’s very important to hold onto those wonderful moments in life and those who meant everything to you.

Special thanks goes out to Irene VanWinkle who was a great friend and caregiver to Doris. Irene was there for Doris to the very end and that meant everything to her and her family.

Arrangements for her cremation are under the direction of the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw, Missouri.
