Took Max (Schnauzer) for a drive around town on Sunday. We passed by the Lay House and it brought to mind a portrait of Robert E. Lee. Years ago my late Cousin Mahlon bid on a big print of General Lee at a Clinton auction. It was sold after the War to build a memorial at Washington and Lee University. It was originally purchased in the early 1870’s by Judge James H. Lay of Warsaw. He also served on the Henry County bench as Benton and Henry were in the same circuit back then. Judge Lay was a Confederate soldier from Benton County. After the war, Missouri’s Drake Constitution kept a great many Missouri Southerners from voting, unless they took an “Iron clad oath” of support. These men included doctors, attorneys and ministers. The “Radical Republicans” who took over the state government were eventually thrown out. A cousin of my great-grandmother named Silas Woodson became the first Democratic governor after reconstruction. He was from Saint Joe. That’s where a once well know Missouri poet Eugene Field was from. I grew up with several of his books. If you’ve never read some of his verses and satirical works, you’re missing something. He was a great newspaperman with a wonderful sense of humor. I’ve learned over the years, it’s a strict requirement for this profession. I sometimes think back to these Democratic Editors. They loved journalism and they loved the Democrat party. What would they think of today’s politics? They’re all gone now and so is the party they knew. If you have time, look up Eugene Field on the internet. While you’re at it, look up “Biden’s Health Cover Up” in the National Review and decide for yourself if we were all played by a Potemkin President and his handlers.

Shawn Adair stopped by this afternoon. He’s an avid weather watcher and follows the Farmer’s Almanac. This led to the discussion of superstitious calendar dates. He noted that 06-06 has long been known for bad weather and strange happenings. Years ago on that date he discovered Mrs. Adair spray painting their cat, completely oblivious to her actions. That’s the tip of the iceberg though. There have been reports of women inducing early labor to avoid having demonic children on this date. Shawn had another “Interesting” story. The town of Hell Michigan stages a big gathering on 06-06. I’ve always wondered why that community was named Hell. Bet it has something to do with the weather up there.
