Have I Got A Line For You1

We’re well into the Autumnal Equinox and Daylight Savings Time is behind us. Before we know it, the Winter Solstice will arrive on our doorstep on Saturday, December 21. In the meantime, it’s not too early to mark our calendars for Christmas which falls on a Wednesday this year. 2024 has ripped along like hell on wheels.

Speaking of time, a comet named Atlas flew by on Halloween night. It belongs to a family of comets known as Kreutz Sungrazer. They follow an orbit taking them near us every 500 years. I remember four years ago on Halloween when a Blue Moon cast its glow. The last time that happened was 1944 and World War 11 was raging. Now we are in a different kind of war. How many times have you heard the phrase “Once in a blue moon?” The term has been around for a long, long time. In 1528 two friars wrote a pamphlet attacking Cardinal Wolsey and other high ranking members of the church. In it they said, “O’church men are wryly foxes, if they said the moon is blue, we must believe that it is true.” So there you have it, the next time you say, “Once in a blue moon” you can thank old Cardinal Wolsey.

The story of Peanut the squirrel has been fascinating to follow. New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation seized and euthanized him last week. Peanut was taken in by Mark Longo seven years ago when he witnessed Peanut’s mother get killed by a car. What a crazed world when state officials intrude on private property, frighten an animal, get bit and then kill it to “Test” for rabies. So much for conservation. This fiasco sums up the current relationship between citizens and the state. We have an arrogant ruling class and it’s only going to get worse.

So we sail into the weekend with another election year behind us. The big show is all over for another four years. My congratulations to the winners and sympathy for the losers. It’s tough to wage a campaign covering many months and then have all that effort go up in smoke in about a 12 hour period. I send you best wishes for a good day Old Buddy, with lots of laughter.
