Someone needs to tell the astrologists and sky watchers that there is a new star appearing in Lincoln and her name is Lily Mellen. The 5'5" freshman guard had 25 points in Lincoln's 36-23 victory over Cole Camp on Monday in Lincoln.
It was 6-2 after one. Lincoln jumped out to a second quarter lead of 18-6. However, Emma Thayer banged a 3-pointer for the Lady Bluebirds to cut it to 18-9 on a five point run to narrow the lead to 18-13 at halftime. Mellen had 16 of their 18 first half points mostly on breakaway steals.Her older sister, Alyssa had two free throws to round out the scoring for the Lady Cardinals.
The third quarter saw Mellen continue her pressure defense resulting in steals with eight points in the paint. The quick freshman point guard led Lincoln to a 33-19 margin heading into the fourth quarter.
Lincoln head coach Brett Bryant said, "We are playing well. Lily is playing well. We got off to a good start in the second quarter. "
Cole Camp head coach Derald Henderson commented, "Their zone hurt us. We made a good run but couldn't maintain our scoring. We have a lot to work on."
Lincoln defeated Cole Camp 30-25 in the Warsaw tournament back in December. Lincoln moved above .500 at 7-6 while Cole Camp fell to 2-11.
