Big Changes Headed For Area Corps Campgrounds

A $550,000 cut in federal funding has made it necessary for the Kansas City District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to make operational changes and closures at several campgrounds located at Harry S. Truman Lake. These changes are being made in an effort to improve park operating efficiencies, while still providing a quality recreational opportunity for the public.
The following changes will take effect immediately:
     All Corps of Engineers managed campgrounds will be closed December through February.

Men enrolled in the Opportunity Farm program, in West Benton County, put together 92 Thanksgiving dinner boxes for local area needy families on Friday, November 22. City Union Mission, headquartered in Kansas City has sponsored this service for the last several years.

Commissioners Began Work On 2020 Budget

The Benton County Commission began preparation of the 2020 budget at their November 12 meeting.  Meetings will be held with elected officials and department heads to obtain budget requisitions.  The Missouri University Extension Council board members met with the Commissioners to present their 2020 budget requests.  Members in attendance included Ronald Dent, Larry Smith, Tammy Culpepper, Amie Breshears and Tom Hare.

Small Business Has A Big Local Impact

The 10th Annual Small Business Saturday takes place November 30 in local neighborhoods throughout the U.S. It is between Black Friday and Cyber Monday and encourages people to do more holiday shopping at local small businesses. Stores on Warsaw’s Main Street are gearing up for what they expect to be a successful sales day as shoppers begin to get serious about buying Christmas gifts.
New Warsaw business, Redwing Coffee and Roastery, at 936B East Main Street, opened on December 4, 2018 with a “big boom,” and is seeing a buildup in business as the holidays get closer.

Veterans Honored With Patriotism And Pageantry

The Warsaw High School Student Council, National Honor Society and FCCLA honored local veterans at their annual Veterans’ Day Assembly on November 13 in the WHS gym.  Veterans and their families were invited for breakfast served by Student Council, NHS and FCCLA members.
After breakfast, the veterans and the WHS and JBMS students were entertained by the WHS vocal and instrumental music departments.

Vandals Repeatedly Strike Drake Harbor

Vandals have been throwing park tables into the water at Drake Harbor during the past three or four weeks. Warsaw City Manager and Planner Randy Pogue said that after City crews retrieved one table from the water, three more were thrown in shortly thereafter.

The impeachment inquiry has a divided response from the public, as reported in polls around the country and opinions offered by local residents.

Foster Care Crisis Looms For County

The Boyd house in Warsaw is rarely quiet as Crystal and Daryl are raising not only their own children but several foster children as well.  Presently there are six children in the Boyd home but that number can change at a moment’s notice.
“After Daryl and I were married we considered fostering a child with the hope of adopting, however, when we started the fostering process we discovered there was a very great need for foster parents so we opened our door,” Crystal said.
