Warsaw Postal Clerk Struck With Meningitis

Warsaw postal clerk Leanna Powers was hospitalized Wednesday evening, October 23, with Spinal Meningitis. It has been determined that the disease was caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, a bacteria that causes an acute infection. After friends and family feared for her outcome, Powers started showing progress tackling the disease at the beginning of this week.

New Jail On Track With Modifications

The new Benton County jail is a working, moving, breathing project according to Benton County Presiding Commissioner Steve Daleske. It is on schedule and is expected to be completed in late September or early October 2020. 

Concerns Explode Over Teen Vaping

One anonymous Warsaw teen reports that vaping was a big trend at Warsaw High School last year and is continuing this year. He said that he got caught up in it, trying it for about a month until he learned that it was the wrong thing to do after seeing the outcome of vaping around the world.
“It seems to have gone down some this year, and none of my friends do it,” said the teen. “I feel that if the people who still do it would open their eyes and watch the news they would stop.”

Heritage Days Is Sensationally Successful

Despite the rainy conditions on Saturday, thousands of visitors flocked to Warsaw over the weekend to attend the Thirty-ninth annual Heritage Days celebration at the Truman Dam Visitors’ Center on Kaysinger Bluff and on Drake Harbor.
According to Kaysinger Bluff Pioneer Heritage Association Board president Scott Mills 5,700 wrist bands were sold to visitors riding the buses up to the Kaysinger Bluff area. That number is down from last year which was 5,773.

New Round Of Phone Scams Target Seniors

There are so many scams going on over the phone and online, that Hawthorn Bank offered information about some of the most current ones at its SeniorFest booth on October 3, in Warsaw. One scam, in particular, is related to Medicare’s open season. A person will say he/she is from Medicare and needs to mail you a new health card, but needs to verify your personal information “to make sure that you are who you say you are!” A call to Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE, verified that Medicare does not make calls to people enrolled in one of its plans unless they are expecting one.

Fall Is A Critical Time For Local Food Pantry

The budget for Benton County’s Food Pantry seems to suffer most during the fourth quarter (fall) of each year. Different organizations have been stepping forward to help with food drives and fundraising to help out. This year it is the Warsaw Elks Lodge 2783 that has been working hard to fill the Pantry shelves.

Warsaw Reaps Reward For Innovative Tourism Growth

The City of Warsaw received the Innovator Award at the Governor’s Conference on Tourism held in Columbia, October 8-10. The Innovator Award pays tribute to those smaller tourism entities or destinations that achieve great results with small budgets. It was one of eight awards given out at the conference.

Cedar Grove Becomes Disaster Relief Resource

One hundred and fifty disaster relief volunteers gathered at Cedar Grove Baptist Church near Warsaw on Friday and Saturday to learn more about how to help victims of natural disasters.
“The Missouri Baptist Convention has eight regions and four training sessions are offered each year.  This year Warsaw was selected as one of the sites and we were happy to host the event,” Cedar Grove Baptist Church minister Barry Edwards explained.
Each of the volunteers must have a background check and be trained before they are sent to a disaster area.

For the past three months Warsaw’s Main Street, between Seminary and Ferry Streets has been a construction zone. Warsaw City Administrator Randy Pogue reports that although the contractor, Do-Rite Construction, out of Lincoln, has about two more months to complete the improvement project, he expects that the majority of the work will be completed by Heritage Days.
