The Christmas holiday is commemorated in many ways including caroling, plays or pageants, decorating, displaying Christmas trees, and giving gifts. Attending church services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with candlelight services, midnight communion and Bible readings that focus on the coming of Jesus and his birth are also a major part of many Christian celebration of the holiday.
Since Christmas falls on a Monday, a federal holiday this year, some churches are limiting their worship services to Christmas Eve which falls on Sunday. The Benton County Enterprise was able to contact the following local churches for information about their worship services for the coming weekend.
First Methodist Church of Warsaw, at 154 W. Washington Street, plans two services on December 24. A regular morning service will take place at 10:30 AM and a Candlelight Service will start at 9:00 PM that evening.
Cedar Grove Baptist Church at 31766 Cedar Grove Avenue in Warsaw will have morning worship at 10:00 AM on December 24, and a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 9:00 PM. The church has already performed a cantata in honor of Christmas. It took place on December 10.
St. Ann’s Catholic Church at 30455 W. Dam Access Road in Warsaw will have regular masses December 23 at 6:30 PM and December 24 at 8:30 AM. Christmas Vigil is scheduled on December 24 at 9:00 PM. The Nativity of the Lord service takes place on Monday, December 25, in Warsaw, at 8:30 AM.
St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church at 15042 Chat Avenue, Cole Camp, will have mass on December 24 at 11:00 AM and Vigil at 7:00 PM.
St. Ann’s Catholic Church Knights of Columbus will also offer a free (donations welcome) Christmas Day dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. On the menu are traditional Christmas dinner items including turkey, ham, stuffing, two kinds of potatoes, green beans, hot rolls and deserts.
Evening Shade Mennonite Church at 33949 Yoder Avenue in Warsaw (near South School) began celebrating the Christmas season with caroling on December 17. There will be a Christmas Eve service beginning at 6:00 PM which may have a small skit and will include a circle time where worshippers may reveal blessings they have experienced throughout the year. Candles will also be lit. Members have related that Evening Shade is not strictly for Mennonites, but has attendees who include Catholics, Baptists, Mennonites and others.
First Baptist Church at 305 E Jefferson in Warsaw, will have a Candlelight Service at 6:00 PM on December 24.
Faith Lutheran Church at 1201 Dogwood in Warsaw has a Divine Service at 10:00 AM on December 24 and a Christmas Eve Service at 6:30 PM. There will be a special program with the choir and a live nativity. There will also be instruments played and congregational involvement. On December 25, The Feast of the Nativity/Communion service will take place at 9:00 AM with a lot of singing.
Warsaw Christian Church at 320 State Street in Warsaw will have regular morning worship service at 10:00 AM on December 24. It’s candlelight communion service on Christmas Eve will begin at 7:00 PM.
River Church at 28863 Commercial Avenue will have a Christmas Eve Service 10:00 AM-11:00 AM on December 24. “The True Meaning of Christmas” is the theme of the service featuring special music and Pastor Sam sharing the Christmas Story from the Bible. Candle lighting will end the service.
Zion & Immanuel Lutheran Churches in Lincoln will have the following services this weekend. On December 24 worship service at Immanuel will begin at 8:30 AM. At Zion, Sunday School will start at 9:00 AM and worship services begin at 10:30 AM. Christmas Eve service at Zion begins at 6:00 PM. On December 25 there will be a Christmas worship service at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Zion Lutheran Church is located at 21011 Rotermund Ave, and Immanuel Lutheran Church is at 17430 N. Lincoln Road.
Lincoln and Hickory Chapel United Methodist Churches in Lincoln are served by one pastor. Hickory Chapel United Methodist, located seven miles west of Lincoln on Hwy C, offers a 9:00 AM worship service on Sundays. Lincoln United Methodist has its worship service at 10:50 AM. It is located at 217 W. Main Street in Lincoln. Information about special Christmas services is unavailable.
